Shellfish
Around the globe, our ancestors have identified similar foods as sacred. These foods contain nutrients and compounds that feed our bodies in both ways that science has explained and in mysterious ways that our western minds do not yet understand. There is an ineffable quality to some foods that can be viewed through the lens of contemporary homeopathy. Animal brains boost the human brain, fats heal the gut lining, and eggs are good for fertility. It seems simple, but is a wisdom that has been forgotten through generations of overconsumption of sugar and flour.
So, what about shellfish? What is the mysterious, sacred quality that is imparted when we consume these beings?
Shortly after beginning the Ancestral Foods diets, I began to crave fish. I mean really, strongly, crave. I had this overwhelming feeling that if I did not find a good wild fish source, I would surely perish. Specifically, I began to crave shellfish. So, I went down to the Natural Foods Coop in Sacramento and purchased a pound of unshelled, wild-caught shrimp.
As I prepared this food today, cracking the peels and sauteeing the meat in bacon grease, I felt into how it was feeding me. I felt the slimy skins rebuilding my nerves and veins, and the moistening quality of the fresh, light meat. I felt how this food could oil my joints and strengthen my ligaments.
Is there a food that you crave from your ancestral lineage? How do you feel this food feeds you?
